My first trip of 2019 was a road trip with my dad to Orlando in partnership with Greyhound. We spent two incredible days exploring the city’s non-touristy side, including where to go to get a taste of Orlando’s best food and beer. Come join us as we experience more of The City Beautiful!

Our afternoon started at Lake Eola in downtown Orlando, where you can rent paddleboats and see sites like a pagoda and the Walt Disney Amphitheater along its shores. For $15, we rented a paddleboat and took a 30-minute ride around the lake. I highly recommend it!

From there, we took a pleasant, 20-minute walk to Church Street, which is closed off on Fridays and Saturdays and becomes a weekend hotspot. The downtown area was safe, clean, and more laid-back than Miami. Along the street is an old, preserved railway station that’s surrounded by retailers and condos.
Also along Church Street was our next destination: Ceviche Tapas Bar & Restaurant, a Mediterranean restaurant that opened in 1997. We started with two different types of a Spanish craft beer called 1906: the Bach for me and the Vienna for my dad. It was like a cross between an amber and a stout and was fantastic.
We followed that with four types of ceviche: Gambas (shrimp), Pulpo (octopus), Atun (tuna), and Casa (shrimp, scallops, squid, and market fish). The Pulpo was super fresh and contained a delicious mix of capers and pickled onions, and the Gambas contained jalapeños, which were pretty hot, but also really amazing. The Casa was a little tangy with a nice crunch and contained a white fish and lots of vegetables. The Atun was also really nice and was full of flavor.
Next, we had the Tabla Mixta, which consisted of a spread containing serrano ham, chorizo, lomo, tetilla, blue cheese, honeycomb, Cabrales, mustard, and more with some bread. The tetilla was very buttery and the blue cheese with the honeycomb was outstanding!
Next was the Rabo de Toro, or braised oxtail with red wine and saffron rice. The meat was so tender, buttery, and tasty, and fell right off the bone. We followed that with a Verdejo wine from Spain that was light and similar to Albariño.
Up next, we had the Mariscos paella, which is a rice dish from the Alicante and Valencia regions of Spain that contains lobster, shrimp, scallops, squid, mussels, and chorizo. It contained a wet rice and I loved the flavors and the big chunks of calamari, and there was a nice amount of spice as well.
We finished our meal with flan, a custardy, gelatinous dessert that’s topped with caramel. It was unreal, almost like a crème brûlée without the caramelized sugar on top.
Our next stop was Orlando Brewing, the city’s pioneer in craft beer. They are one of only six organic breweries in the U.S., and this place is committed to using only the highest-quality ingredients. They have 35 beers on tap and more in the cooler. We tried their creamy vanilla English Pale Ale; grainy Pumpkin Stout; a creamy Jelly Roll; a very strong American Strong Ale; a citrusy Grapefruit Pale Ale; a creamy, caramel-flavored O-Town Brown Ale; a chocolatey, toasty Papa Midnight Imperial Stout with coffee flavor; a more basic stout; the Grand O Hoppy Double IPA; and an IP Lager that was like a lager-style IPA before taking a tour of the facility, which contains four 30-barrel vessels. I love seeing how breweries make their beer!
Next, we headed over to Broken Cauldron Brewery & Taproom, which contains two breweries under the same roof: Broken Strings and Black Cauldron. We tried their light Country Road Lager; Red Mosquito Amber IPA, which was like a marriage of an amber and an IPA; a fantastic Liquid Vinyl Black IPA with coffee and some hops; B-Sides Mango-Ginger Sour, which is like a very sour fruit drink; an English barley wine; and the nutty and vanilla-infused Demon of the Fall Hazelnut.
