STORYLINE:
Starting Wednesday, bacon burgers are a thing of the past in 22 outlets of fast food chain Quick, where offerings are being tailored to meet the dietary needs of France’s large Muslim community.
The business decision to target an under-exploited market has unsettled some in France as the country debates what integration means and prepares to ban the wearing of burqas in public.
At the Quick restaurant in Fleury-Merogis outside Paris, burgers once served with bacon now come with smoked turkey instead.
Animals used in the food must be slaughtered following Quranic guidelines.
There is even a certificate on the wall to prove it.
The restaurants still serve beer, however.
The restaurant chain says sales have doubled at eight restaurants where the halal offerings were tested out.
The head of the restaurant chain for the Paris region, Abdel El Machkour, said the intention was not to “segregate a particular community”.
He said the decision to make certain restaurants halal was born of research suggesting it would suit their customers.
Some customers said they were not bothered by the changes.
However, one customer, Audrey Oliveira said she was disappointed with Quick’s decision.
“It focuses the attention on the community that comes to eat here,” she said.
This was a view shared by Stephane Gatignon, the left-wing mayor of the suburb of Sevran.
He said he is worried that the plan will encourage “ghettoisation” in France, instead of healthy multi-culturalism.
Quick’s announcement that it is expanding its halal offerings has also riled politicians on the right of the political spectrum.
