My trip to the states of Assam and Meghalaya in northeast India in March of 2019 is one I will never forget for the rest of my life. The people I met there were so friendly and accommodating, the history and culture were fascinating to learn about, the natural beauty blew me away, and the food was some of the best I’ve ever had. I loved my time there and am so excited to share my experiences with you guys!

On the evening of my first and only day in Tezpur, my friend Kamal from Tezpur Buzz and I headed to a local temple and then had a wide variety of street foods around the town for dinner. Come along with us as I continue exploring Tezpur!
We started at Mahabhairav Temple, which is dedicated to Shiva and is thought to have been built between the 8th and 10th centuries by the kings of the Salasthamba Dynasty. The temple contained a lot of empty space. There was a small prayer hall on the grounds, as well as Lord Shiva’s linga. There’s also a statue of Nandi, Lord Shiva’s messenger.
Always remember to take your shoes off before you enter a Hindu temple. I took mine off and Kamal and I headed inside. Inside, I explain why Ganesha has an elephant head before I rang the bells inside, which alerts the Lord that you’re entering. Then we visited Shiva’s linga, where people pray and offer donations. It’s huge – almost four feet tall and two feet wide. The temple itself is beautiful!
Next, it was time to eat! I couldn’t wait to try lots of different dishes. Our first was dabeli, which is a sandwich with jelly. I’d had it before in Ahmedabad, but this version was a little different. It’s like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with onions and sev. It was really refreshing with big chucks of peanuts and bread similar to an English muffin.
Then I hopped back on Kamal’s bike and we headed to Arunima’s Takeaway, which sells Lebanese chicken. Instead, we went with bamboo chicken, which I tried in Hyderabad. It’s cooked in bamboo and the smoky, bamboo flavor permeates the minced chicken. It had some chilies and onions in it. It was hot!
Then I went with the banana leaf chicken, which was like a chicken cutlet. It was full fo chilies and was super tasty, like a chicken pancake with chilies! It wasn’t spicy but was so tasty. Cooking the chicken in the banana leaf gave it a whole different flavor. The bamboo chicken cost us 140 rupees/$1.99 U.S. and the banana leaf chicken was 60 rupees/$0.85 U.S.
Next, we took a very short ride to a food stall to get some chicken pakora. It only costs 10 rupees per piece. It comes super hot and fresh out of the oil. It was served with an amazing sauce. I loved the masala on it. I also loved the sauce. It was similar to a chicken lollipop, except this was breast meat. It was fantastic! Nice and crunchy and perfectly fried. It was even better than a chicken lollipop! We ate it boiling hot because we didn’t have time to let it sit and cool down!
Our last stop was Durga Misthan Bhandar, where we got some jalebi, which is a sweet treat that is made of deep-fried dough in a spiral pattern and coated in a sugar syrup. This was one of the first things I ate on my very first day in India back in February of 2018. I loved it! It was crunchy and sweet, exactly the way I remembered it!
