I had the pleasure of an all access experience with the AMYA team of volunteers, who had given up their time to help the less fortunate.
It was a humbling experience to say the least. The bitter cold during the Christmas Holidays made me think nobody in their right mind would come out to spend what could have been a nice night in with family, to instead be with those that had no friend or companion.
The volunteers met at the mosque to begin preparation around 3pm on the day, with kitchen staff having been there much earlier to prepare the food.
When everything was packed and ready to go, we travelled to various locations around central London, delivering hot food, tea and clothes.
The most distressing thing about the entire experience is the sheer number of less fortunate people that have to live in such awful conditions, yet we are constantly bombarded by issues outside of the UK by our media. We need to begin turning the tide here at home first – as we all know, Charity begins at home…
I would urge all those interested in helping to get involved… Sacrificing even a few minutes of your time to ask someone how they may only take a fraction of your day, but it will surely change the life of the person you ask.
