When I visited Kolkata, India in November of 2018, I tried countless spectacular Indian dishes, but these are my top 15!
- Momos (Territy Bazaar)
First up are the momos at Territy Bazaar. You can’t go wrong with the steamed chicken or fish momo, or the crunchy fried chicken momo!
- Fish & Pork Ball Soup (Territy Bazaar)
The fish & pork ball soup at Territy Bazaar consists of fish & pork balls in a tasty herbal broth. I loved the salty fish and the meaty pork! It tasted like authentic wonton soup!
- Bengali Fish (Swadhin Bharat Hindu Hotel)
You must try the Bengali seafood at Swadhin Bharat Hindu Hotel, especially the Ilish, which is a fish in a tasty, rich gravy. Also, try the Chital Peti, which is a gelatin-like fish stomach. They’re delicious but bony!
- Fried Hard-Boiled Egg (Dilkhusa Cabin)
The huge fried, hard-boiled egg at Dilkhusa Cabin is coated in multiple layers, including potato and beet root. It’s full of contrasting flavors and textures and is super spicy!
- Rasgulla (Putiram Sweets Shop)
If you’re looking for a sweet fix in Kolkata, try the Rasgulla at Putiram Sweets Shop! It’s a small ball of chhena, semolina dough, and boiled cottage cheese that is cooked in a sweet syrup. The ball absorbs the syrup, making it super sugary!
- Kolkata-Style Chinese Noodles (White Town)
Another amazing, Chinese-inspired dish are the Kolkata-Style Chinese Noodles in White Town. They’re super filling and contain red sauce, onions, chilies, and other vegetables. I loved the crunch and the sweet and sour flavors!
- Dal Chilla (White Town)
Don’t leave White Town without trying the Dal Chilla, a lentil pancake that is topped with onions, tomatoes, and coriander and served with mint and garlic chutneys. It was so flavorful and the mint chutney gave it a lot of heat!
- Luchi Ghughni (Decker Lane)
Number eight is the Luchi Ghughni you can find on Decker Lane. It’s made up of a puri and a somewhat spicy curry made with yellow peas, chickpeas, and potatoes. The tamarind chutney on the side balances the heat and adds a nice sweetness!
- Dhokar Dalna (Decker Lane)
Another fantastic Decker Lane dish is Dhokar Dalna, which is a dense bar made from fried, compressed lentils in a flavorful curry. Wrap it in a roti to make a tasty, Indian-style taco!
- Kebabs (Arsalan Restaurant)
I thought I’d tried India’s best kebabs in Lucknow, but little did I know they were actually in Kolkata’s Arsalan Restaurant! The succulent fish kebabs, chicken and cheese kebabs, and mutton kebabs were all perfection!
- Mutton with Paratha (Shyambazar)
Head to the Shyambazar neighborhood to try some of the most delicious mutton I’ve ever eaten! It’s slow-cooked in a divine sauce for hours until it’s perfectly tender and served with a paratha and onions. It is heaven in your mouth!
- Hing Kachori (Little Rajasthan)
Next, head to the Little Rajasthan neighborhood for some Hing Kachori, which is flattened wheat flour balls with spiced Urad Dal and potatoes on the side. The best parts are the crunch and the minty gravy!
- Kadhi Kachori (Little Rajasthan)
The creamy and crunchy Kadhi Kachori in Little Rajasthan is a sweet and spicy snack that consists of kachoris, a yogurt-based curry, lentils, and lots of spices. It’s so freaking good!
- Chena Toast (Little Rajasthan)
Imagine a loaded grilled cheese sandwich that’s made with cottage cheese. That’s chena toast, a toasted sandwich that also contains tomatoes, onions, and chilies. I savored every bite!
- Kathi Roll (Nizam’s Restaurant)
The original Kathi Roll at Nizam’s is made up of a buttery, eggy paratha stuffed with mutton, onion, chilies, and a squeeze of lime.
