One of the main things that drew me to the idea of visiting India for the first time in February of 2018 was its legendary street food, which I had heard so much about for years. After falling in love with the food, as well as the country’s culture and people, I almost immediately began planning my return trip, which to took just ten months later in November. Together with my buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey, I ate my way through seven cities in just under three weeks and had an incredible cultural and culinary experience I will never forget!

Day one in Ahmedabad may have been coming to a close, but we still hadn’t had dinner yet! I again enlisted the help of my new friend Rutu and her brother, who took me and Sam on an outstanding veg food tour that blew my mind! Come along with us as we wrap up our first day in this incredible city!

For dinner, Rutu and her brother took me and Sam to Food Junction, an amazing spot in the city where roughly 20 food trucks converge around 150 tables and serve a variety of different cuisines, including Mexican and Chinese, but made with an Indian twist. I couldn’t wait to dive into some of the most delicious food in the city!
We started off with some shots of plum puree served atop dry ice, with salt around the rim. It was amazing! Super thick, with lots of sweet, mouthwatering plum flavor. It was like a cross between a plum smoothie and a non-alcoholic margarita!
Next, we went to Eat ‘n Meet, a barbecue food truck that sells Paneer Tikka with cheese, which is melted with a blowtorch. The owner was so kind to us and offered it to us free of charge. We got two different paneer dishes, Tandoori Paneer and Pudina Paneer (200 rupees), alongside mint chutney. The Tandoori Paneer was thick and juicy, and the tomatoes and other vegetables provided a really nice contrast to the roasted, charcoal flavors. The Pudina Paneer was equally phenomenal and came with onion. It wasn’t spicy at all, but was still packed with so many amazing flavors. It was my first time having veg barbecue and it did not disappoint at all!
Our next food was a fried, mixed Indo-Chinese dish from Chowpaty, called Paneer Manchuri (150 rupees), which is a mixture of Paneer Chilli (my favorite Indian dish ever) and Manchuri. The Manchuri’s texture reminded me of a Chinese fish ball, but I learned it’s actually cabbage! It contained lots of chilies, but wasn’t too spicy.
Next, we had cheese corn rolls, which were like little cheese croquettes served with mint chutney and tomato chutney. It was crunchy on the outside and the doughy inside was almost like bechamel! I loved it with the mint, but it was even better with the tomato!
Our next culinary adventure was at a truck that sells over 2,000 varieties of sandwich! We got a Tarka sandwich, a spicy sandwich made with a focaccia-like bread and a vegetable filling, that is then topped with butter, spices, a cracker, and a mound of shredded cheese. It came with five chutneys, the first of which was delicious, and the sweet chutney was also very nice. The spiciest was very hot, but I could handle it! At 200 rupees, it’s the costliest sandwich on the menu.
Our last dish was ice cream rolls, which are made on a frozen griddle right in front of you. Mine was called the Chocolate Blink, which contains Oreos, KitKats, and Nutella and is topped with chocolate sauce and comes with two wafer cookies. It was so rich and decadent, and all of the flavors were infused into the ice cream. I’d never had anything like it before, and it was so good! It was the perfect end to our veg street food tour!
I loved the food at Food Junction! The vendors were so friendly and hospitable, the setup here is so cool and organized, and it’s definitely one of the best food truck spots I’ve ever visited.
