Saturday seems like a great day to visit the Portobello Road in Notting Hill. The Portobello Road is magnificent on its own, but during the Saturday there is also the Portobello Road Market which provides one of the top market experiences amongst London markets.
It was a beautiful weekend, and I was thrilled that I got a chance to introduce some delicious desserts to my friend Ivan who was just visiting London.
The most common and the busiest way to Portobello Road Market is from the Notting Hill tube station. However, because of the enormous popularity of the local Portuguese patisserie, the Lisboa Patisserie, we were afraid that they might run out of their glorious Pastel de nata, so we decided to start from the other side of the Portobello Road.
The Portobello Road market is famous for its vast amounts of antique shops and stalls. That combined with the great variety of food options, makes it almost impossible to experience everything in just one day.
As usual, I did a massive research on the internet, to find out what are the most popular cafes and bakeries in the area and I’ve chosen the ones which are the most mentioned and rated on the internet.
Lisboa patisserie – the first place on my list was the Portuguese cafe and bakery, the Lisboa patisserie. They bake some fantastic bread and pastry, but the biggest seller is the Pastel de nata, the egg tart pastry. I read on the internet that, because of the popularity of their Pastel de nata, it can be sold out in the afternoon. We planned to stop here as the first thing on our list, and it was a good choice. At 11:30 am the place was already insanely busy.
Price for one Pastel de nata is £1.35
Pearl and Groove – in my opinion, this was the most excellent find of the day. The bakery is almost at the end of the Portobello Road, so it’s not as full of tourists as other places closer to the Portobello Road market. But what an experience. Cupcakes in here are quite expensive, but their rectangular shape makes them twice the size of the regular cupcake. Plus, the combination of gluten-free dough and the fantastic selection of flavors is just excellent. We had a great, relaxing time here and the cakes were delicious.

Gelateria 3Bis – This is an excellent gelato. They pride themselves on using organic milk and high-quality ingredients from Italy like pistachios, hazelnuts, liquorice and with 15 years of gelato experience. They have four shops around London, and Gelateria 3Bis became my go-to place for gelato during the summer.

The Hummingbird Bakery – This bakery has such fame around the internet that I have to stop there for the last cupcake of the day. They started here at Portobello Road Market, bringing the American style baking to London since 2004. The signature cake is the Red Velvet cake, and that’s what I went for. I have to be honest that I usually don’t like American cupcakes that much because the icing is just too sweet for me. However, I can tell that the quality of the cupcake is definitely there and even when the place was super busy the people in the bakery were accommodating and patient.

I, personally, felt that the Hummingbird Bakery is a little bit overhyped and the internet fame the place got is a little bit working against it. I enjoyed the experience and flavors of the desserts in other places during the day a little bit more. Notably, the Pearl and Groove was tremendous and a pleasant surprise. However, I keep my mind open, and I will try more cupcakes in London to make the proper comparison in the future.
