What’s up, guys? In this edition of my Miami street food series, I’ll be diving into Italian street food with my wife Ana. Join us as we eat an amazing truffle burger and pizzas at Made in Italy in Wynwood!
Made in Italy is a food truck that has been around since 2017, which focuses on high-quality gourmet street food like burgers, pizza, truffle fries, and more. It’s right across from Midtown.
We masked up and headed inside the truck to meet Juan, who is from Venezuela, and Lucia, who comes from Italy. He began making our first pizza (a Margherita) with basil, cheese, and tomato sauce and put it in the forno, or the oven. The oven comes from Italy! It only takes 90 seconds for it to cook in there! After he took it out, he drizzled it with olive oil and then started on our second pizza.
The second pizza is the tricolore, which is a white pizza with arugula, fresh prosciutto di parma, mozzarella cheese, and parmesan cheese. Every ingredient they use is super fresh. The aroma of the melting mozzarella cheese was unbelievable! After it melted, they topped the pizza with the arugula, prosciutto, and parmesan.
Outside, we started on the Margherita pizza, which had a thin crust and was just like the pizza back in Italy. It was a little more fluffy. I’m not usually a huge fan of Margherita pizza, but this one was awesome, fresh, and light! Ana liked that the sauce was fresh and not jarred or canned.
The tricolore pizza was unbelievable. The two cheeses, fresh arugula, and prosciutto was such an incredible combination. It would have been amazing with some truffle oil! It almost felt like a stuffed crust pizza! Both pizzas were a great appetizer!
Back in the kitchen, Michael from Made in Italy showed me how to make Panzerotti Pugliese, which is like a small, lightly fried calzone that’s filled with tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese. They fry it until it’s a golden brown.
Next, he started on making our truffle burgers, which are made of angus beef. He tops it with mozzarella cheese and covers it so it melts, and then adds the truffles on top. The bun is toasted and smeared with cilantro sauce, arugula, and tomatoes. Then, the burger patty is topped with mushrooms and caramelized onions, and drizzled with truffle oil.
If you prefer a plant-based option, Made in Italy also has the Impossible Burger!
Finally, we had our burger and panzerotti out at our table. The panzerotti is basically the Italian version of an empanada. The dough on it was amazing. It was a little crispy on the outside, doughy on the inside, and is a lot like a pizza.
The burger was huge and heavenly, and the cilantro-garlic sauce was amazing with the caramelized onions, arugula, and tomatoes. It was a monster! The quality of the beef was fantastic. They actually have amazing burgers in Italy!
Our final dish was the cannolo siciliano, which comes from Sicily. It’s a crispy, fried, rolled dough crust that is filled with fresh, sweet ricotta cheese and topped with powdered sugar. They were a smaller version of regular cannolis.
The crust was dense and overall, it was very good. The ricotta was fluffy and tasted like pastry cream. It was like we were back in Italy!
What an incredible meal! Everything was fantastic, but the tricolore pizza and the truffle burger were my favorites.
