Originating from the south of India this delicious thin crispy pancake holds a special place in my heart from time spent in the southern Keralan backwaters. We then took to the streets to see what other streetfood this neighbourhood had to offer.
Encountering the ubiquitous Indian classic, the samosa and one of the most delicious naughtiest sweet treats on the planet, Jalebi! Known by other names such as zulbia, jilapi, mushabak and zalabia this syrup laden, deep fried dessert is everything and more a sugar addict could hope for! What I didn’t realise was that it’s roots spread back further than the Indian subcontinent to Persia!
Southall currently has a majority Punjabi community, but there are all manor of Indian cultures along with some Pakistani’s living side by side.
