From Halal-cured meats to modest fashion shows, the London Muslim Lifestyle show promises everything the modern British Muslim could ask for.
Claiming to be the biggest event of it’s kind, over 200 Muslim-focused stalls have set up shop for the weekend in the British capital.
STORYLINE:
On the hottest weekend of the year so far, visitors were up early to attend the Muslim Lifestyle Show 2018 in London.
Billed as a one-stop-shop for Muslim fashion, food and live entertainment, the Islamic cultural and shopping event expects to attract around 20,000 people from across the UK and overseas for the two-day event.
According to the Office of National Statistics, there were 2.7 million Muslims in England and Wales at the time of the last census in 2011, nearly half of whom were under the age of 25 and 88 percent were under 50.
With figures like these it is no surprise to see such large numbers in attendance to experience a tailor-made event.
Abayas and other types of Middle Eastern clothing have grown in popularity in the UK in recent years and there is no shortage of the latest, British-created designs here.
Food is a popular selling point at any event, and the Muslim Lifestyle Show is no exception.
The latest trends are in traditional western specialities marketed to a Muslim market.
Tapas for example has long been off the menu for halal-conscious consumers as it often contains pork.
But at the Ojos Food stand there is a surprise amongst the olives and olive oil.
Cecina de Leon or cured Spanish beef now has a halal variety as owner Encina Barragan explains.
“Everybody sees on the TV programmes and everywhere, all the pork-based products and we have used the best kept secret in Spain which is the Cecina de Leon (cured beef) which is the place that it comes from. And thanks to that product that’s been nominated the gastronomic capital of Spain, and Muslims they love it because they have an alternative which is healthy and it’s good for you as well. And there’s no cooking or cleaning!”
Elsewhere at the event, Muslim-friendly travel agents offer holidays featuring halal food, private women-only beaches and alcohol-free hotels and resorts.
If the hard sell gets too much, however, a cricket cage is on hand where tired shoppers can take a break and let off steam.
One of the highlights of the Muslim Lifestyle event is the ‘modest’ fashion show.
Here the latest in loose-fitting garments and headscarves like these by the fashion label Aidijuma are on display.
Overseeing the whole event is Kevin Jackson, one of the founders of the Muslim Lifestyle Show.
He has seen the event grow by thousands in the three years since it started.
“The Muslim Lifestyle Show is contributing both to the confidence of Muslims who display and sell their items here to the Muslim community and also allowing Westerners to see Muslims as something other than just a religion. It’s food, it’s fashion, it’s finance, it’s travel,” he explains.
“It’s allowing them to trade because as my partner says, commerce breaks down barriers.”
The London Muslim Lifestyle Show 2018 takes place on 21–22 April 2018 at Olympia London.
