(21 Aug 2020) Food trucks that typically depended on people congregating in downtown feeding the hungry masses of tech workers and others in Seattle before the coronavirus pandemic sent many home to work are now venturing out to their new workplaces – the suburbs.
Residents who would normally be working in the city are happy to get a little taste of normalcy back to their lives, and food truck owners have found a way to keep revenues flowing while many brick-and-mortar restaurants continue to suffer amid lockdowns and limited capacity seating.
The owners of Seattle’s Dreamy Drinks usually park their truck near office downtown where workers would come out to buy bubble tea drinks during their breaks.
But with most offices closed, they recently headed to the suburban city of Lynnwood where a neighborhood association with more than 800 homes requested their business.
Owners Athan Freitas and Kaye Fan say they’re now making almost as much money as they used to during a typical summer.
They said their customers have changed with most of their business now being children studying and parents working from home.
Julie Schwab, who helped bring the trucks to her community, said they’ve brought her neighborhood closer together and provided a rare opportunity to safely socialize and fell less isolated in their homes during the pandemic.
