With just a few days left on our whirlwind trip through India, Sam and I had only one more city left to explore. We knew we had to go all out, so just hours after landing in Ahmedabad in the middle of the night, we were back at it with an authentic Gujarati breakfast food tour that I’ll never forget!

Day one in Ahmedabad kicked off bright and early after just a few hours of sleep. We met up with my new friend Rutu, a local food blogger, who offered to show us around with her brother.
The first stop we made was to a tiny restaurant selling jalebi, peppers, a deep-fried snack made of chickpea flour called Ganthiya (40 rupees), with papaya chutney. The Ganthiya was soft and airy, like a biscuit, and the curry I had it with was soupy, minty, and pretty mild. Next, I downed several peppers and tried the papaya chutney, which was a cold and refreshing palette cleanser. We finished with a yellow jalebi (30 rupees), which was sweet and crunchy, but had a different taste than I was used to.
Next, we stopped for some chai that contained mint, ginger, and lemongrass. It was frothy, milky, and so delicious!
Our next stop was Oshwal, where we had another airy and crunchy fried chickpea flour dish called Fafda (77 rupees) with a lentil-based curry, chilies, and papaya chutney. The Fafda was fantastic and was like a dense wafer! The chilies weren’t too hot and I followed them with more refreshing and cooling papaya chutney.
Next, we had Lilva Kachori, which are deep-fried flour balls that are stuffed with pigeon peas, green chilies, coriander, and other spices. It was both sweet and savory, with a bit of tamarind flavor, with a hard exterior and a nice, soft inside. It was my favorite dish of the morning so far!
Our next food destination was The House of Khaman, a small bakery and supermarket that sells lots of varieties of Khaman, which is a steamed snack made from ground lentils and chickpea flour, and Dhokla, a very similar snack that is made from rice gram batter. I went back to the kitchens to watch the cooks make these snacks and then headed back out to try them.
We had the original Dhokla with chilies, cumin, coconut, and coriander; Dhokla with mint, curd, coriander, coconut, and chili powder; a Khandvi with sesame seeds and coconut; sev; and a mystery chutney that contained cumin. The original was spongy and airy, very savory, and reminded me of a matzo ball. The chilies with it were mild and refreshing. The Dhokla tempered with curd was sweeter, and the cumin absorbed all of the mint flavor. It was amazing! The one with red chili powder was like the original, but with a kick of spice, and the Khandvi was extremely soft and tasty with the sesame seeds. The sev was also sweet and had a nice crunch. I couldn’t figure out what was in the chutney, but it was still really tasty!
