For the third entry in my epic dive into Miami’s street food scene, my dad and I decided to hit up a vegan food truck! Come along with us as we try some tasty, plant-based dishes and learn all about vegan street food in Miami!
We headed out to southern Miami-Dade county near Miami Executive Airport (formerly Kendall-Tamiami Airport). There, you’ll find Sunday Coffee & Conscious Eatery, a food truck that offers vegan food I’d heard lots of amazing things about!
Insise the truck, I met Chris, who told me all about his favorite dishes, including a chilled orzo salad with salsa verde, applewood smoked trumpet mushrooms, avocado, and red onion. They also have artichoke toast on sourdough with sundried tomatoes, beans, and ancho chili butter. They also make Indian and Mexican dishes, and they make their food spicy!
First, Chris made some vanilla limeade, which is fresh lime juice with vanilla extract and sugar. It was delicious and refreshing and tasted like sugarcane juice!
Then, Chris started making the artichoke toast by taking bread, spreading it with vegan butter, and toasting it. In another pan, he added artichokes, sundried potatoes, and butter beans. Then, he added ancho chili rub and vegan butter with chopped almonds and parsley. It looked amazing!
At our table, we tried a limonade de coco, which is lemonade with coconut milk. It was perfect for the heat! Then, we dug into the artichoke toast. It was full of chile flavor but wasn’t spicy at all. The contrast of textures from the soft beans and the crunchy almonds was incredible! The sauce was amazing, too. It contained so many different flavors!
Then, we got a paratha with three dipping sauces! I love Indian flatbread, so I couldn’t wait to try it! First, Chris buttered the flat top and grilled up the paratha. With it, we had green mango amba, spiced white onion pickles, purple carrot pikliz, and a cup of Indian spices called chunk. The amba was like a green mango chutney!
The first time I ate a paratha was in Delhi in northern India. My dad tried it by itself first, but I dug right into the green mango amba. The paratha soft but a little crispy. The chunk had some heat that snuck up on me! I loved it, though!
The pikliz is like pickled cabbage or onions, but the spiced white onion pickles were also amazing. They were moist and crunchy. But my favorite was the green mango amba! It’s basically an Iraqi chutney.
Next, we went with the chilled orzo salad with charred salsa verde, applewood smoked trumpet mushrooms, and avocado. Orzo is a rice-like pasta that you can find in Greece. To the orzo, Chris added olive oil, charred salsa de verde, mashed avocado, and salt. It was delicious! The salsa verde was very similar to a pesto. It was like a refreshing summer salad. The mushrooms had a really nice texture, almost slimy. It’s super filling even though it’s vegetables!
Our last menu items were a smoked cherry cashew cheesecake and a mango cheesecake! I’m not usually a big dessert guy, but I love a bomb cheesecake. He sprinkled couscous on top!
The smoked cherry was fantastic! It was one of my favorite cheesecakes ever and wasn’t too sweet. It was also made fresh! The crust was great and the ingredients were so different but it was still so amazing. The mango was also unreal!
Then, they made some straight espresso coffee. He weighed the espresso and extracted it and then iced it. This plant-based meal was exceptional! My favorite thing was the artichoke toast, but the paratha was amazing, as was the orzo. They have a limited menu and everything is between $6 USD and $10 USD!
