A Muslim cleric and his associate were shot by a gunman on Saturday while walking together shortly after prayers at a mosque in Queens, New York.
The gunman approached the men from behind and shot both in the head from close range. The murders took place at about 150pm near the corner of 79th Street and Liberty Avenue in the Ozone Park neighborhood.
The victims, Imam Maulama Akonjee, 55, and Thara Uddin, 64, were both wearing religious garb at the time of shooting. They had just come from Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque nearby.
Police said the suspect wore shorts and a dark polo shirt. He was seen by witnesses carrying a large handgun. No arrests have been.
Police say they have no motive yet for the shooting or evidence that that the two men were targeted because of their faith. The New York Times reported that Akonjee carried more than $1,000 at the time, which was not taken.
