New Orleans Restaurants, French Quarter and Beyond- Reviews

Let us know in the comments below what’s the next delish city we need to visit!!

What other restaurants in New Orleans we need to visit next time we are down there?

We are recapping our lovely trip we took to New Orleans. This was our first time there and our first adult only vacation. A disclaimer should be we do not normally eat like this, but we do not know how to act if we are not eating a home cooked meal.

Our first stop in New Orleans was at 3AM in the morning. Options will obviously be limited at that time but flavor was all there. Koran got the Shrimp Po’Boy and I got potato salad. I mean I really wasn’t trying to eat at that time but since everyone was ordering, I just had to try something. Both of our dishes were delish. My potato salad was sweet and tangy. His Shrimp Po’Boy was jammed packed with shrimp, which was awesome, and lots of great flavor.

With a nice, well-rested start to our day we started with Ruby Slipper for brunch. They have such a considerate menu for all of those that cannot make a decision on what to get on a menu. For $15, you get two options for your eggs benedict. I got the “Corn Beef Bennie” which is “house made corned beef hash served over a buttermilk biscuit, topped with two poached eggs, horseradish cream, finished with hollandaise” and the “Chicken St. Charles” is “fried chicken breast served over a buttermilk biscuit, topped with two poached eggs, finished with a pork tasso, which is a highly spiced cured and smoked pork, cream sauce. Koran got the “Chicken St. Charles” and the “Shrimp Boogaloo “ which is Gulf shrimp sautéed with pork tasso, served over fried green tomatoes & a buttermilk biscuit, topped with poached eggs, finished with a creole tomato court bouillon sauce”.

This was ridiculously filling. The whole trip we were sort of like “oh yeah, it is 6pm we should probably eat dinner”. That’s why we did not eat at that many restaurants, we just could not manage eating that much food.

The next day we managed to get an early start figuring if we actually have an early breakfast we could manage eating a lunch and a dinner. Well that theory didn’t work out for us but we did get to do a lot more sightseeing.

Mother’s (World’s Best Baked Ham) restaurant was our breakfast spot. I got the Meat and Grits, I choose the World’s Best Bake Ham. I mean they are saying it’s the World’s Best how could I not have it! Koran got the “Debris Po’ Boy” which is ham, “roast beef and turkey roasted fresh in our ovens and carved in a butcher shop on the premises”, with au jus gravy. Both were delish!

Here’s what the menu explained what a Po’ Boy is :
“The name po’ boy refers to sandwiches served to “poor boys” during a four-month long streetcar strike in 1929. Across town, Benny and Clovis Martin—who were once streetcar conductors—offered sandwiches out of sympathy from the back door of their restaurant. Because the strikers were too poor to pay, it was made from scraps of roast beef in hot gravy ladled over fried potatoes and served on loaves of New Orleans French bread.
Today, the term po’ boy loosely refers to any sandwich served on that bread. Our signature is the Famous Ferdi Special—ham and roast beef topped with debris. The ham itself, often called the “World’s Best Baked Ham,” is widely sought after. The time-honored secret recipe produces a ham that is tender and sweet. The glaze results in a caramelized black ham crust.”
Next was The Original French Market Restaurant. We got Garlic and Herb Char-Grilled Oysters with their own fresh herb aioli and the Creole Char-Grilled Oysters with tomato, Tabasco, thyme and lemon. We love raw oysters and were a bit skeptical about trying them cooked. These were just AMAZING!! Here’s our video on shucking oysters:

For our last meal we ate at Coop’s Place. We finally got some Jambalaya. I got the Rabbit & Sausage Jambalaya, which is a traditional Creole rice dish, simmered with tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, local seasonings, boneless rabbit, and smoked pork sausage. Koran got the same thing but Supreme, which is when they add shrimp and tasso (Cajun seasoning ham). This was just divine.

On a more sober note, something we noticed as parents to young children, there was a fair amount of black kids performing on the streets on New Orleans. There were kids that looked as young as Hiro performing on bucket drums, tap dancing (crushed cans on the bottom their sneakers) and dance routines. It weighed heavy on our hearts to see this. It was hard not to feel and see that struggle. It is sad and real.
